PHUKET—Record low scoring and a 13-year-old boy claiming a spot among the top finishers made the opening day of the Mercedes-Benz Masters in Thailand an exciting one.
Thailand's Wisut Artjanawat, Ratsak Hansapiban and Pattaraphol Khanthacha and Singaporean Lam Chih Bing lead the way after confident rounds at Laguna Phuket Golf Club with course record five-under-par 65s.
They lead by a shot from Thailand's Namchok Tantipokhakul, winner of last year's Mercedes-Benz Tour Order of Merit list, and Juvic Pagunsan from the Philippines.
But stealing the limelight in the fourth event of the season on the Mercedes-Benz Tour was teenager Pinsawat Pariwat who lives on Phuket Island and shot 67.
Pinsawat, who began playing at the age of 10, started on the back and was three under with five to play, leaving him well placed to make the halfway cut.
"I wasn't nervous. I wanted to shoot level par and really did not expect to do so well," said Pinsawat.
Wisut's start stands him in good stead for achieving a victory on the tour.
"I am feeling really confident and playing well. I know I can win at least one this year," said Wisut, who claimed two titles on the Mercedes-Benz Tour in 2008 but was winless last year.
